Folders and the folder browser

Each pane's bottom bar shows its current folder in full. Click it to open the folder browser — a fast, keyboard-friendly way to move the terminal, start sessions elsewhere, and work with files without leaving PATerminal.

Written for PATerminal v1.8.3

The path bar

The path bar follows the shell as you cd, never truncates the path (long paths wrap), and labels a detected agent. Clicking it opens the folder browser above it.

Browse folders

Left column
Places (the terminal's folder, Home, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, and the OS's usual folders), Favorites, and recent places. Every row has a copy-path button. Drag the column edge to resize it.
Full path
The folder you're viewing, with each segment clickable, plus Copy path. The .. row goes up a level; Back and Forward sit beside it.
Filter
Start typing to filter the listing. Type . to show hidden files. Enter opens the highlighted folder; Backspace on an empty filter goes up.
Files
Click a file to preview it. Text files can be edited and saved with Cmd/Ctrl+S; closing with unsaved changes asks you first.

Move the terminal to another folder

  1. Click the path bar.
  2. Browse to the destination.
  3. Press Move here. For a plain shell, PATerminal types the cd for you and the sidebar, path bar, and Git controls update right away.

Back to the terminal's folder returns the listing to where the terminal is, and Root shows the drive root without moving anything. You can also hand off to Choose in Finder / Choose in File Explorer.

Change the working folder of a running agent

If claude or codex is running in the pane, Move here doesn't type cd into the agent. Instead the Change working folder dialog appears. Choose Move and resume and PATerminal restarts the agent in the new folder with the same conversation.

Important

Moving interrupts the agent's current work, and unsent input isn't carried over. CLI options you passed only on the original command line aren't replayed. If the conversation ID isn't known yet, nothing is stopped — wait for the agent to save the conversation and retry.

Note

Resuming Claude Code in an unrelated project folder requires Claude Code v2.1.223 or later.

Favorites and new sessions

  • The ☆ button adds the folder you're viewing to Favorites; remove it the same way or with × on its row.
  • New session starts a session in the folder you're viewing without touching the current terminal.
  • Favorites and recent places also appear in the location picker next to the sidebar's + button.

Copy files into a folder

Drag files or folders from Finder or File Explorer onto the open folder browser to copy them into the folder you're viewing — or onto a folder row to copy them into that folder. The target is outlined while you drag. If a name already exists, nothing is copied and you're told why; nothing is ever overwritten.

Tip

When the folder browser is closed, dropping files onto a pane types their paths instead. See Panes.
