Groups

Groups gather related sessions — one per project, client, or feature — into collapsible folders in the sidebar. Groups can contain other groups.

Written for PATerminal v1.8.3

Create a group

  • Right-click a session → Create group to make a new parent group that contains it (it keeps its place in the list).
  • Right-click a group header → Create group to add a child group inside it.
  • Type a group name in the Group (optional) field of the new session form (Cmd/Ctrl+T). Existing names are suggested.
  • Select several sessions (Cmd/Ctrl + click) and press Group in the selection bar.

New groups are auto-numbered; double-click the header (or use Rename in its menu) to name it.

Move sessions and groups

  • Drag a session onto a group to add it, or between sessions to reorder it.
  • Drag a session to the empty area at the bottom to take it out of its group.
  • Drag a group to move it with everything inside — onto another group to nest it, or to the empty area to make it top-level again.
  • Click a group header to collapse or expand it. Opening a session inside a collapsed group expands it automatically.

Group colors

Groups are colored automatically, alternating red and blue down the sidebar so neighbouring groups are easy to tell apart. The color tints the header and draws a line beside its sessions.

  • To choose a color yourself, right-click the group header → Group color and pick one of six colors, or none.
  • To turn automatic colors off, untick Automatically give new groups a red or blue color in Settings → Color theme. Colors you picked yourself stay.

Dissolve or close a group

Dissolve group
Removes the group but keeps its sessions and child groups, moving them up one level.
Close group & all its sessions
Closes every session in the group and its child groups at once, without asking. Closed sessions can still be restored from History → Recently deleted.
